Morongo Basin Coalition for Adult Literacy

Spell-a-thon 2015

March brings with it the chance to enjoy an adult spell-a-thon while helping adult students improve their reading skills and, consequently, their ability to secure better jobs.

The Twentynine Palms Kiwanis Club will once again host the Morongo Basin Coalition for Adult Literacy Spell-A-Thon from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 14 at the Helen Gray Education Center on the Hi-Desert Medical Center campus on White Feather Road south of Twentynine Palms Highway.

Three-person teams compete to see who can spell the most words correctly, with teams eliminated one by one for misspelled words. Money is raised by teams soliciting pledges of support from family and friends and through a drawing that is held after the competition is over.

Funds raised during the friendly competition pay for supplies for volunteers who tutor Morongo Basin adults needing to improve their reading and writing skills.
